Board Candidate 2019

What's your name? Leigh Goldenberg

Why is the Co-op important to you? Originally from the Philadelphia suburbs, I moved to South Philly from New York in 2007. The Co-op merges so many passions and interests of mine – supporting local business, reducing our environmental impacts, nurturing my family with good food, building connections with neighbors, and offering economic empowerment to our community. It’s amazing what we’ll be able to accomplish with our storefront, and I’m excited to continue serving the Co-op in our initial years as an operational store.

When did you join, and (if applicable), how have you been involved? I joined the Co-op in the summer of 2011 as one of the first 100 members, and chaired the Program and Events Committee from 2012-2014. This included planning nearly 30 events each year, including two Garden Tours and dozens of other recruitment, fundraising and engagement activities. I joined the Board in 2015 and was appointed President in 2018. With the Board, I’ve played a key role in our capital campaign through event support, individual outreach and institutional connections. Working with my fellow member-owners has been a joy for me, and brought me and my family some of our closest connections in South Philly.

How will your experience, skills, or unique perspectives strengthen the Co-op board? In my professional life, I am the Executive Director of Theatre Philadelphia, the region’s marketing and audience development organization for theatres. My entire career has been with nonprofits and mission-driven organizations, primarily in marketing and communications roles. My community involvement also includes chairing the Friends of Kirkbride Elementary, serving as a Democratic Commiteeperson in the First Ward, hosting a weekly CSA pick-up at my home, and advocating for safe streets.
