Our friends at the Kensington Community Food Co-op are using this fall to conduct a member-owner campaign. Their goal: 60 new member-owners in 60 days ending on December 1. As part of the effort, they've organized a number of activities in and around their neighborhood to continue spreading the word about their effort to open a food co-op in Kensington.
Below is the text of a press release they sent around. We encourage all of our members and followers to check out what they've got going on and to spread the word to any of your friends and family who live in Kensington, Fishtown, Northern Liberties and the surrounding neighborhoods so they might consider joining up.
Kensington Community Food Co-op Launches “60 in 60” Membership Campaign
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 15, 2013:
Kensington Community Food Co-op (KCFC), whose mission is to open a member-owned cooperative grocery store that provides healthy, quality food in the Kensington area, recently launched its “60 in 60” membership campaign. In support of the campaign, volunteers have organized a series of exciting neighborhood events in October and November.
KCFC’s goal is to recruit 60 new members in 60 days so that by December 1, the co-op reaches and exceeds the 400-member mark. The 60 in 60 campaign comes on the heels of the big announcement that KCFC is in negotiations for the future home of its co-op grocery store.
At this stage in the life of a startup co-op grocery, members are a crucial source of capital and support, and over the next several weeks KCFC leaders and volunteers will intensively recruit new members by asking them to make a one-time investment in the store.
The co-op is pushing this campaign in the midst of a major expansion of co-op stores in the Greater Philadelphia area. Last year The Reinvestment Fund, a national leader in financing neighborhood development, showed its support for this movement by awarding Food Access Grants of $25,000 each to KCFC and the South Philly Food Co-op, which is also planning to open a member-owned, cooperative grocery store for the residents of South Philadelphia.
Between now and December 1, KCFC’s is encouraging residents of Kensington and throughout the city to come out to all the 60 in 60 activities, including three big events:
- Bottle Bar East Happy Hour (10/23, 6–9 pm, 1308 Frankford Ave.)
Frankford Ave.’s newest craft beer shop and bar is hosting KCFC and has agreed to donate $1 from drink sales. Bottle Bar will be offering happy hour prices on their well drinks, wine, and beer throughout the event! It’s also Quizzo night and $50 gift cards are available to the winner.
- Pizza Brain/Little Baby’s Eat & Greet (11/6, 6:30–8:30 pm, 2311/2313 Frankford Ave.)
Our neighborhood’s pizza/ice cream headquarters is hosting another KCFC Eat & Greet! And they’re offering a great deal of a slice and a scoop for $5.
- Adorn Boutique Eat & Greet (11/21, 7–9 pm, 1314 Frankford Ave.
A great chance to get started on holiday shopping. Come check out Sarah Lewis’ Adorn jewelry collection along with other hand-picked apparel, gifts, and accessories! Adorn is offering a 20% discount to co-op members on all products purchased at the event. Complimentary cheese and cocktails provided.
