Our Mission

Using food as a force for good—at our tables, in our community, and for our planet.

Who We Are

The South Philly Food Co-op will be South Philadelphia’s only community-owned grocery store. The Co-op will serve as our neighborhood’s source for fresh, whole, real food. More than that, we will be a hub for community and food-centric education, south of South, river to river.

The Co-op is cooperatively owned and democratically controlled by a growing community of South Philly neighbors (you can become a member-owner today!). By leveraging our combined purchasing power, we are taking ownership  of our local economy and keeping our hard-earned dollars right here at home. You won’t find any phony baloney at our store; we keep it real, sharing honest information about our values, our products, and our prices.

Our shared beliefs will guide us as we stock the shelves of the Co-op. You’ll find food you can trust to be good for your health and our planet, prioritizing fairly-traded and sustainably-produced products free of harmful additives or chemicals. Whenever possible, we’ll buy direct from local farmers and food-makers, because we believe in supporting our neighbors. And the Co-op will be open to everyone—not just members—because we believe that all people have a place at our table.

The best thing about cooperative ownership is that when the community speaks, the Co-op listens. We’ll continually evolve our product mix and programs to reflect the needs (and wants!) of the membership, and the voices of our neighbors. By working together, we believe we can make a meaningful contribution to a thriving, healthy community and a sustainable planet through the power of food.

We Believe:

  1. South Philly is an awesome place to call home.
  2. A vibrant community embraces people from all walks of life.
  3. Healthy, wholesome food should be accessible to all.
  4. Our food choices have an impact on the people and world around us.
  5. Investing in our community has the power to make a big impact.
  6. The fewer miles food has to travel, the better.
  7. We are more than just a store.
